Vera Pinto Gomes
Policy Officer – European Commission (DG GROW)
Vera Pinto is a Policy Officer at the European Commission specialising in European Space Policy and European global satellite-based navigation systems: Galileo and EGNOS. She holds a Master’s Degree in Political Science and International Relations from the Nova University of Lisbon, Portugal. Prior to her time working at the European Commission, she was an EU Grant Manager for the Portuguese Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs. Her main area of interest is business development, market development and space innovation.

Thomas Tanghe is a Manager at SpaceTec Partners, where he works on strategy engagements, start-up coaching and innovative funding instruments. Amongst others, Thomas is the author of the “Crowdfunding Innovative Ventures” and “Copernicus User Engagement Strategy” reports, published by the European Union. Thomas has a Masters in Management and a Masters in Industrial Engineering and previously worked for the European Space Agency and Deloitte Consulting.

ESA Technology Broker Network Manager – Verhaert
With a heart for innovation, Sam Waes has built up over the past 20 years an extensive portfolio of new initiatives realized in various domains. He has a background as industrial designer and proven experience in ICT projects, e-learning, communications, new business development and intrapreneurship. Seven years of his career were dedicated to the marketing communication of a large multinational in the machinery business. Currently Sam is employed by Verhaert Masters in Innovations where he’s combining the role of managing the ESA technology transfer network with innovation consulting activities towards B2B companies. Sam describes himself as “an ambitious people manager that wants make teams outperform.”

Unit Manager Remote Sensing – VITO
Since November 2014, Steven Krekels is Manager of VITO’s Remote Sensing unit, which develops and operates space- and airborne based earth observation systems. After obtaining a Master’s Degree in Applied Engineering, he joined the Bell Labs of Lucent Technologies for research and development in Optical Networks. In 2001 he made a switch to the space industry and started working in the domains of Earth Observation and Satellite Communcation at Thales Alenia Space. He later moved on to Newtec, a leading Belgian satellite communication equipment provider, where he acted as Managing Director of Newtec’s subsidiary in Berlin.

Belgian ARTES Applications Broker – ESA
Nicolas Helssen is currently the Belgian ambassador for the European Space Agency’s Integrated Applications Promotion programme, working out of the Belgian Science Policy Office in Brussels. His brief is to promote the IAP programme to potential candidates and guide them through a successful application process with ESA and BELSPO. He previously worked at the European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications in the United Kingdom as an economic researcher.
